Promoting Hope Among Youth: Theory, Research, and Practice

Abstract

Hope is conceptualized as a motivational construct comprised of goals, agency, and pathways. Over the past 15 years, research about hope in the lives of youth has increased greatly. In addition to studies indicating that hope is related to numerous positive outcomes in youth, researchers have recently begun applying these findings to intervention efforts with children and adolescents. In this chapter, theory, measurement, and research about hope among youth will be reviewed. Intervention programs that have been developed for youth will be described, as well as directions for future research and applications.
