Abstract
In the preceding chapter, I have how intelligent vertebrates and, in particular, birds and primates are. There is a continuing debate as to what degree the different kinds of intelligence discussed are accompanied by consciousness. Certainly, it is conceivable that some kinds of intelligent behavior, including acts of “social intelligence,” need not be accompanied by consciousness, but may be a case of fast learning.
