Tsunami Induced by 2011 Tohoku-Pacific Ocean Earthquake and a Possible Renewal Plan

Geotechnical Predictions and Practice in Dealing with Geohazards

Abstract

Huge tsunami waves induced by the 2011 Tohoku-Pacific Ocean earthquake destroyed major breakwaters placed at the mouth of bays in the Sanriku area and swept away practically all human activities there. It was striking from the viewpoint of designing breakwaters against what was possibly the largest tsunami ever to occur. This chapter describes the probable failure mechanism of the breakwaters placed on the seabed at a depth of approximately 60 m. A combined possible renewal plan is also proposed for the breakwaters as well as the cities and villages in the Sanriku area. This plan consists of constructing two major highways running parallel along the seashore and inland hilly area, which are high enough to be safe from the reach of tsunamis that are likely to happen in the future.
