Abstract
The development of mathematical water quality models is still a matter of intensive research, with the aim of obtaining reliable tools, able to give the closest interpretation of “real world” and suitable to be applied to the wide range of management decisions. Attention is paid primarily to the Fickian models, which are predominant due to their successful applications in a variety of problems. Currently, several attempts are also in progress to develop and test models based on different fundamentals, adopting concepts borrowed from other disciplines. This chapter discusses the future trends in water quality modelling.
