Abstract

This chapter summarizes current knowledge on the contribution of the human papillomavirus (HPV) to the etiology of cancer. An etiological link between HPV infection and cancer at particular anatomical sites is reviewed. Those sites are the uterine cervix, the penis, the head and neck and the anus. For each site, the epidemiology, clinical features, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis are examined. Finally, recent progress in the developments, approval, and clinical implementation of vaccines targeting HPV is reviewed.
