Abstract

Countless expressions of discrimination and discriminatory practices are described in this chapter. Legislation that is discriminatory is highlighted along with other political, social, and economic factors that create discriminatory and inequitable practices. Generational differences in discrimination are also addressed. This chapter was designed to assist educators and children to better understand and develop antidiscriminatory attitudes and practices. Numerous practical suggestions are provided as well as authentic examples from a wide range of classrooms.

If there is anything that we wish to change in the child, we should first examine it and see whether it is not something that could better be changed in ourselves.
