Abstract

This chapter provides an introduction to the topic of competency-based language teaching in higher education and an overview of the volume it opens. The initial section is fourfold in structure: it begins by anchoring the topic within the broader backdrop of the frameworks which are channeling reform in language teaching on both sides of the Atlantic; illustrates how competency-based teaching has become a cornerstone in this transformation both in Europe and North America; provides operational definitions of the concept of competency while mapping its core features and chief taxonomies; and canvasses where we stand in the process of adaptation to a competency-based model in higher education. In turn, the second part contextualizes the three main sections of the monograph – how to prepare for, teach, and evaluate competencies in Bologna-adapted language degrees – and summarizes the 11 chapters they contain.
