Cultural Diversity in a School-to-Work Transition Programme for Undergraduate Students

This chapter presents an analysis of an interculturally oriented school-to-work transition programme (STP) implemented at the University of Victoria, Canada. The research tries to explore the effectiveness and limits of the approach. The reasons for addressing school-to-work transition through the lens of multiculturalism in Canada (increasing youth unemployment and sociocultural diversity) are first presented. Then, the driving theoretical concept of the research, diversity stance, and its dimensions, i.e. culture, diversity, multicultural realization and intercultural interaction, are explained. Based on interviews and observations of the programme and its students, it is concluded that diversity stance could be affirmed through the STP on campus, though limitations could be observed. Suggestions for similar initiatives are drawn.
