Controlling Complex Technical Systems: The Control Room Operator’s Tasks in Process Industries

  • Chapter
  • First Online:

Abstract

This chapter addresses the control room operator’s task and the issue of ‘what control room operators control’. A definition of the term complex technical system is provided, followed by an introduction and definition of the constituents of a complex system such as interconnectivity, dynamic effects, non-transparency and crew coordination affordances. In order to understand crew coordination complexity, plant operation team roles are explained. A list of operators’ tasks is provided, as well as differences between process industries batch/mix and process/flow industries relevant for understanding the operator’s control tasks. The constituent characteristics of a complex task are introduced. Finally, a distinction is made between routine and non-routine tasks as well as between normal and abnormal situations as relevant work conditions and context factors to be considered in training design.
