Abstract
This book has traced the evolution of the legal rights, rules and principles of international law which have governed the use force between states since the sixteenth century. Its historical approach provides the reader with a complete understanding of the earliest point in time at which the law has authorised the inherent right of self-defence to be exercised at any time throughout this period.
