Abstract
To live is to tremble. The body shakes and twitches in constant convulsions. A vibrating, oscillating wave movement runs through the nerve threads, causing the whole living being to tremble with it. The slightest touch, the smallest movement of thought, can spread in seconds over tissues and ligaments, like the strings to the sounding board in a clavichord. But death is petrifaction, rest, as tremulations abate and waves level out. Swedenborg’s idea that tremulations constitute life itself proceeds from geometrical-mechanical forms of movement—waves. The wave metaphor is extended from the visually perceived arching of water waves, spreads through the air waves of sound and the swift ether waves of light, finally ending up in the wave impulses of the nervous fluids. Water waves serve as a model and a source of metaphors through which he tries to understand sound, light, and nerve movements. As a geometrical figure, waves describe a rhythmic change, a recurrent movement up and down, back and forth.
