Abstract

This chapter contains thoughts on megaquakes as seen from the point of view of the engineer. Terzaghi’s Six Commandments included a warning against cutting corners. Tsunamis could be caused by recoil of the subducted plate. Can disasters be “affordable” or “sustainable”? Some final considerations on sustainability, building codes, disaster culture, and ethics, are provided. A long list of recommendations is appended.
