Abstract

This chapter deals with the Christian education in Brazil. As a vast country of continental dimensions, it has a strong leadership in South America. The text presents a definition of Christian education and of the Protestant education in the light of the Reformation. An overview of Protestantism in Brazil since its arrival, its characteristics, and how it expanded in Brazilian soil are also dealt with. The text offers some data on Protestant education in Brazil, its beginnings and development, and how it spread through different Christian denominations. The historical churches such as the Lutherans, the Presbyterians, and the Methodists always invested in education and therefore built large universities in the country. On the other hand, the Pentecostal groups, because of their history of anti-intellectualism, have a long way to go in terms of education. In spite of the difficulties among Pentecostal, it’s possible to perceive today their effort to improve the situation. The goals and challenges of Christian education for evangelical leaders in Brazil are also presented in this chapter.

As a member of the Assembly of God since 1971 this researcher also met the nonintellectualism of the Pentecostal movement. “I remember that at that time I wanted to study and prepare myself for the university. I constantly heard from church officials that “studying would destroy my faith, and that I would lose time going after the empty philosophies of this world.” Additionally, “Satan would use teachers to confuse my head and would ruin my spiritual life.” The first theological education Institutions among Pentecostals suffered a lot of resistance from their leadership.
