Abstract
There has been growing recognition of the need to have better ways to analyse and understand the idea of ‘Quality-of-Life’ (QOL). One approach has been to see QOL as based on a range of different forms of capital. This chapter will argue that such an approach could be particularly valuable for assessing the relationships between tourism and the QOL of destination residents. It will focus specifically on destination residents and on one of the proposed forms of capital, social capital. After defining and describing social capital, the chapter will examine how tourism can affect the social capital of destination residents through a case study analysis before concluding with a discussion of how tourism could be used to build social capital.
