International Perspectives on Teaching and Learning with GIS in Secondary Schools

Abstract

Geography is one of the major courses offered in secondary schools in Turkey. The new secondary school geography curriculum developed in 2005 emphasized Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as an important tool and recommended its use in geography lessons. This chapter describes how the inclusion of GIS in geography curriculum effected the diffusion of GIS in secondary schools and what important steps have been taken so far to utilize it in geography lessons. In this chapter, the book GIS for Teachers, published in Turkish, has been emphasized as an important development that has made GIS accessible to all teachers. GIS-based projects and class exercises along with in-service teacher education are highlighted in the chapter as additional steps toward making GIS a common educational tool for schools.
