Abstract

The adult brain of mammals has the potential to self-repair and regenerate. Adult neurogenesis is enhanced in the hippocampus and reduced in the subventricular zone (SVZ) of patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Enhanced neurogenesis in the hippocampus of AD patients suggests a regenerative attempt to compensate for the neuronal loss, whereas reduced neurogenesis in the SVZ would contribute to pathological processes associated with the disease, such as anosmia. Neurogenesis has the potential to generate aneuploid neuronal cells in the adult brain. Adult neurogenesis and neural stem cells (NSCs) would thus contribute both beneficially and detrimentally to the pathology of AD. Adult neurogenesis and NSCs are as important for our understanding of the development of the nervous system and for therapy, as for our understanding of the etiology and pathogenesis of neurological diseases, particularly AD. The understanding of which will lead to novel treatments and therapies for neurological diseases and injuries.
