Abstract

This chapter describes a methodology for identifying the nature and attributes of the time series of climatological variables, which is usually the first step for water resources planning and management. A detailed description of the statistical approach used to investigate the presence and extent of persistence, trend and periodicity in climatic time series is presented. Results of persistence and trend analysis are reported spatially for the basin. The hydro-climatic variables considered for analysis are annual rainfall; monsoon and non-monsoon rainfall; annual, monsoon and non-monsoon rainy days; onset of effective monsoon; and aridity index.
