Abstract

This chapter presents an overview of applications of the mindfulness practice examined in Chap. 4. Beginning with the currently most widely influential use of the practice in MBCT/MBSR courses, I go on to describe a typical 8 week programme in this sphere before discussing evidence about the effectiveness of these approaches in the treatment of anxiety and depression. The value of mindfulness in connection with older people – particularly the work of Langer (Mindfulness. Addison Wesley Publishing Co., New York, 1989; On becoming an artist: reinventing yourself through mindful creativity. Ballantine Books, New York, 2005) in this field – is also examined, in addition to a survey of the links between mindfulness and the ‘socially engaged’ movements that have emerged in recent times.
