Abstract
Chapter 1 introduces the project of the book, unpacking and teasing apart the legacy of colonial representations of women in education and the postcolonial project of resistance. The author begins by examining her personal legacy of colonial education; a project that highlighted the achievements and honor of the west at the expense of the vast majority of history that rests on the unequal exercise of power and the oppression of those who are labeled as other. The author positions her own experience and education within the larger project of postcolonial feminist pedagogy and explores the rationale for undertaking this project. This chapter introduces the reader to the transnational feminism, postcolonial pedagogy, and visual orientalism that are woven throughout the book.
