Abstract
Kaufmann was an older close friend of Schutz who urged him to study Husserl’s works, they engaged in that study together, and Schutz thereby became a phenomenologist. They were colleagues together at the New School for Social Research and their friendship continued in the USA until Kaufmann died. It is unfortunate that these are all of Schutz’s letters to his friend. Schutz’s memorial essay for Kaufmann is printed in CP IV.
