The Human Pursuit of Well-Being

Abstract

The study addressed the test-retest reliability of the children hope scale (CHS; Snyder, Hoza et al., Journal of Pediatric Psychology, 22, 399–421, 1997) and students’ life satisfaction scale (SLSS; Huebner, School Psychology International, 12, 231-240, 1991) over a 6 months and 1 year period. A sample of 367 middle school students completed a questionnaire packet that included the Portuguese versions of the CHS (Snyder, Hoza et al., 1997) and SLSS (Huebner, 1991) on three occasions separated by 6 months and 1 year. Results show that the test-retest stability coefficient is .60 and .50 for the CHS and .69 and .56 for the SLSS, after 6 months and 1 year, respectively. Findings support the theoretical premise that hope and satisfaction with life demonstrate some trait-like properties. Implications of these findings are discussed.
