Abstract
This chapter gives an overview of possible design strategies to achieve a sustainable built environment. It provides the reader with basic knowledge of quantitative assessment methods, with a strong accent on life cycle analysis, which is currently the scientifically accepted method for environmental impact assessment. In addition, qualitative assessment methods (rating schemes) are handled. Finally, design methods dealing with interdisciplinary and multi-actor systems are briefly dealt with.

Exergy is the quality of energy, see Sect. 5.5.3 for a definition.
- 3.
Sustainable chain management outlines the ecological, economic and social impacts that occur during the life cycle of a product and focuses on measures to improve the sustainability of the product (Verhagen 2004).
