Abstract
The literature available suggests that the international trend toward the “managerial university” has only attained momentum in Germany since the mid-1990s – later than in many other advanced countries. As a result, German academics surveyed in 2007 continue to note the relatively strong influence of faculty on their institutions and relatively weak signs of a managerial dominance, and consequently their affiliation with their institutions – which was very low in 1992 – has increased since. Further comparison between the 1992 and 2007 surveys shows that university professors in Germany have worked longer hours and published more in recent years. This does not hold true for junior staff at universities and academics at other institutions of higher education in Germany. Altogether, the job satisfaction of academics has increased over time – most strikingly among junior academic staff at universities who had expressed a low level of satisfaction in 1992.
