Abstract
The first information on surface glycoproteins came from studies of animal cell surface coats. It came from histochemistry and electron microscopy (EM). Both effective EM resolution (~20Å) and selective ferritin staining for the cell surface coat promoted studies on the topic (Luft, 1976).
