Abstract
In the previous Chapters we have presented many aspects of the morphology and microphysics of the aurora. The purpose of the present chapter is to describe theoretical models that try to put these into wider context. As there is yet no model that encompasses all aspects, the chapter will necessarily be rather heterogeneous.
