Abstract

Topological defects carry a topological charge coming from the non-trivial boundary conditions. In the case of the kink, this charge is proportional to φ(x = +∞) − φ(x = -∞). For vortices, it is the total magnetic flux, ∫d 2 xB integrated in the plane perpendicular to the vortex, ’t Hooft-Polyakov magnetic monopoles carry a magnetic charge that can be related to the non-trivial “hedgehog” configuration of the Higgs field outside the monopole core.
