Forensic Imaging of Magnetic Tapes Using Magnetic Garnet Indicator Films

Abstract

A garnet imager system has been developed for the forensic evaluation of magnetic tapes. The system employs a unique stage design which allows viewing of events on a micron scale, while keeping accurate reference of spatial relationships of events on the tape over tens of centimeters. The imager has been used on a range of tapes, from audio cassettes to high density computer back-up tapes.
