Abstract
Since chemical complexity and then life itself came about as part of the evolutionary history of the cosmos, it would be helpful to have an overview of that history. After an introduction to a few key concepts, several relevant topics in modern cosmology are reviewed. These include: the Hubble Law and the age of the universe; large scale structuring; galaxy formation and evolution; and cosmic chemistry.
