Abstract
Special works on radioecology has been conducted in Azerbaijan since 1988. To determine high-radioactive areas in the central part of Big Baku and Sumgayit city there were conducted detailed gamma-survey. As a result of that contaminated areas were determined. Some of them were liquidated. The radioactive environment in the territory of the Kura depression, in the Pri-Caspian-Guba zone and in the Greater Caucasus was studied as well. There was determined that normal radioactive background in the Absheron peninsula varies 4-10 mcR/h. It becomes higher in the areas of outcropping of Oligocene-Miocene layers (20-25 mcR/h) and lower in the zone of beach sands (3 mcR/h). The background radioactivity in the territory of Azerbaijan varies in the same range. This is typical for the most of regions throughout the world.
