Abstract

Plutonium is an integral part of nuclear power. Synthesized from uranium in neutron flows from nuclear power facilities, plutonium is accumulated in spent fuel unloaded from reactors.

Depending on the accepted model of the fuel cycle, plutonium can remain in a “bonded” form (in a fuel composition with heavy-nuclei fission products — “open” fuel cycle) or be separated in a pure form as a result of radiochemical reprocessing of spent fuel (“closed” fuel cycle).
