Strength and Weakness (SWOT) Analysis of Humankind to Overcome the Global Ecological Challenges

  • Chapter
A World In Transition: Humankind and Nature

Abstract

At the treshold of the 21st century, we live in a world that is changing at ever higher pace. In the same time this changing world is under pressure of unprecedented ecological and cultural (in the broad, anthropological sense) challenges. According to many eco-philosophers and cultural philosophers, this state of affairs might be due to a great extent to mechanisms that have proven to be so successful at micro-level, but that seem to be ineffective or counter-productive at the global scale. I am pointing, e.g., at the competitive market mechanisms, that are forcing private corporations to increase very effectively and continuously their material and energy throughput.
