Chiral aminals in asymmetric synthesis

  • Chapter
Advanced Asymmetric Synthesis

Abstract

Aminals are the nitrogen equivalents of acetals.1 Acyclic aminals are not usually very stable. In contrast, the cyclic ones are stable compounds in neutral and basic media. Particularly attractive as reagents are the 5-membered ring systems (imidazolidine ring), because of the availability of chiral 1, 2-diamines and the ease of hydrolysis back to the aldehyde, which can be done under very mild acidic conditions.
