Abstract

As a member of the Göttingen circle of phenomenology, Jean Hering launched some of the most provocative ideas in early phenomenological ontology, in particular through his compact essay on neglected differentiations in the field of essence. His plea for individual essences, Wesen, deserves special mention. In this area, Hering’s thought influenced many groups of phenomenologists, and Roman Ingarden in particular. Particularly influential was a small but famous essay entitled “Bemerkungen über das Wesen, die Wesenheit and die Idee” (Hering 1921).
