Abstract

At the end of the nineteenth century, Alfred Gabriel Nathorst (1850–1921), then professor of palaeobotany in Stockholm, planned a major investigation of plant fossils from Iceland. This work was, however, put aside and not revived before his death. What remained was a set of more than 40 sheets containing pencil drawings of several hundred fossils from Iceland. The drawings prepared by Carl Axel Hedelin and Thérèse Ekblom between 1885 and ca 1910 are of extraordinary beauty and highest precision. Because of their grandeur and accuracy these pencil drawings constitute an outstanding body of scientific illustrations. They are made available here for the first time.
