Abstract

Gangliogliomas are mixed glioneuronal tumors with two histological features: atypical ganglion cells and neoplastic glial cells. They comprise approximately 0.4% of all central nervous system tumors and less than 2% of all intracranial tumors. Gangliogliomas are usually located in temporal lobe. Brainstem gangliogliomas are unusual tumors and only few cases have been reported in the literature. Complete tumor resection if feasible, is usually associated with good prognosis. The surgical management of these tumors depends on their location. The definitive role of radiotherapy and chemotherapy has not yet been established. Even after resection a close long-term follow-up is mandatory for these patients.
