Abstract

In this chapter we deal with groups of matrices and related concepts. We have already defined GL(2, ℝ) to be the group of all 2 × 2 invertible real matrices, and seen (in Examples 2(d) and 3(e)) how it acts on ℝ2 by matrix multiplication on the right. We now generalise these ideas to arbitrary fields F and to larger matrices.
