Water and Food Security in Central Asia

Abstract

The formation of huge amounts of drainage water is characteristic of irrigated agriculture in the Central Asian region. During the intensive development of new irrigated lands, drainage water amounted to 39–40 km3out of a total surface water resource of 110–115 km3. In recent years, a decrease in drainage flow volume to 32–34 km3 has been observed due to forced reduction of specific water supply per irrigated hectare because of excessive expansion of irrigated areas, development of industry and other water-using sectors of the economy, and population increases.
