Abstract
Using motor vehicle manufacturers’ websites, information about associations, newspaper articles, advertising, GoogleEarth, Wikimapia, and Wikipedia, I created a data base of 1,261 global motor vehicle plants in use since World War II. Nearly 161,000 acres (65,150 ha) of land are devoted to auto assembly complexes worldwide. Depending upon the country, and perhaps contrary to popular thinking, a number of different approaches to land use related to auto production are evident and discussed. The questionable U.S. position in auto production, Japan’s stability, Europe’s variability and up and coming Malaysia and India are all considered. China, though unrationalized at present, seems destined to become the world’s lead producer.
