Abstract
Diagenetic change begins early in carbonate depositional environments (Bathurst 1975; James and Choquette 1990) and is usually manifest in the form of biogenic and chemical alteration (Fig. 11.1). The overall result of such processes in temperate water systems is loss of carbonate (Smith and Nelson 2003). Whereas this theme is true for the southern Australian open marine realm, large segments of the same marginal marine depositional system, because of semi-arid climate, are sites of intensive mineral precipitation.
