De-Standardisation or Changing Life Course Patterns? Transition to Adulthood from a Demographic Perspective

This chapter takes issue with the concept of de-standardisation and proposes a broader approach to changing life course patterns. It discusses demographic, sociological and psychological perceptions of de-standardisation and de-institutionalisation, and confronts them with empirical findings of cohort changes in the transition to adulthood in West Germany. The chapter underlines the need to seek more profound theoretical and empirical approaches to processes of social change, which also capture transitory stages of de-standardisation and pathways to re-standardisation in demographic and social development.
