Part of the book series: Cellular Origin, Life in Extreme Habitats and Astrobiology ((COLE,volume 13))

Abstract

This review examines recent taxonomic revisions or emendations at various taxonomic levels, higher than sections, using molecular as well as morphological information. The system of classification for the freshwater Rhodophyceae has undergone many revisions. Among freshwater Rhodophyta, Kumano (2002) recognized the following orders, order Porphyridiales, Goniotrichales, Compsopogonales, Acrochaetiales, Balbianiales, Batrachospermales, Thoreales, Hildenbrandiales, and Ceramiales. Molecular data such as 18S rDNA and rbcL gene sequences have been employed to infer relationship among taxa at various taxonomic levels.
