Abstract

Standards represent an established norm or requirement for technical specifications, criteria, methods, processes, or practices. In electronic communication, a standard can be defined as an agreement between some players in a certain field where the topic of agreement is the technical specifications of various aspects of the communication technologies. Often a distinction is made between so called de jure and de facto standards. This distinction relates to the emergence of the standard – basically whether they emerge as a result of the specifications of a national or international authority or as the outcome of market introduction of a specification leading to the establishment of that specification as a particular standard.
