Abstract
This chapter provides an overview of the basic tools that are used in the rest of the book, namely: the principle of virtual power, the thermodynamics of irreversible processes, and a description of the different classes of constitutive equations. Elementary models are defined in onedimensional loading, and the classical functions used to describe the yield locus are presented. Numerical techniques are also considered: the methods used to solve linear systems, to integrate ordinary differentiel equations. Finally, the finite element theory is introduced.
