Abstract

Figure 113 was taken from the German edition of Frank Leslie's Illustrierte Zeitung, 1889; the picture familiarizes us with Costa Rican town San José, a town consisting a great deal of simple ground-floor houses strongly damaged by the earthquake of December 29–30, 1888. Seismic losses were multiplied by a number of local fires ignited by overturned stoves and ovens. Both church steeples were shown as strongly damaged, inclined, and threatened to collapse.
