Abstract
In Flanders, the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium, French is taught in schools as the first and English as the second foreign language. German, the third foreign language, used to play a very important role in the educational system. Since 1970, however, its position has continuously deteriorated. In comprehensive schools and secondary schools with vocational subjects, the third foreign language was either dropped or the contact hours were reduced (Van Loon&Berger, 2000; Duhamel, 2001).
