Abstract
The objective of this chapter is to give the fundamentals of atmospheric composition and of air pollution. The terminology is also determined and a few key data are given.
The atmospheric composition is investigated in Sect. 1.1. We introduce the concept of trace species. The main primary (emitted) and secondary (formed in the atmosphere) species are also presented. Emission inventories at global scale are given. Section 1.2 details the vertical structure of the atmosphere. The characteristic timescales of the major atmospheric species are defined in Sect. 1.3. A comparison between the timescales of atmospheric transport and atmospheric residence time makes it possible to classify the different pollutions.
