Abstract
Dr. Paul F. Brandwein is noted for many achievements in the scientific and educational worlds. Some would describe him as a scientist; others would say that he was a writer; still others would say he was an educator. All of these roles carry incredible responsibilities because each one ultimately has an impact on the others. It is accurate to say that Dr. Brandwein melded successfully all of these roles into his highly productive life as a scholar who wanted to make a difference for the young. He often used this phrase—the young—when the more frequent word choice was “students” or “children.” Reflecting on his choice of words leads to the realization that the use of “the young” implies a certain level of understanding. Think about the world of animals. The following phrase might come to mind: “caring for the young.” The resulting inference is that all responsibilities for the offspring need attention or their survival is questionable.
