Many of you are doctoral students at research extensive institutions and will go on to further your careers at other research institutions. This chapter, however, is aimed at those of you who may choose a college or university that focuses on teaching and you wish to develop your leadership potential. It may also be helpful for individuals considering a career change to an institution that focuses on teaching. Despite the focus on science education, some of the strategies provided within the chapter may be useful to individuals considering a position in which they may be different from their peers, such as a person who focuses on applications of research working with a group oriented toward basic research.
