Abstract
In writing this book I have become more aware than ever of the gaps in our knowledge about the biology of house dust mites and how they affect human health, but do not propose to give a comprehensive listing of them here. I have never had much faith in the value of inventories with titles the likes of ‘Future research directions’, and have occasionally wondered idly about their purpose. Presumably they are aimed at researchers in the field. But these people are already only too familiar with the logistic, intellectual and experimental obstacles that confront them, and generally have a very good idea of what needs to be done next. Nor can I think of a duller cue to prod at scientific creativity than the optimistic prescription of some well-meaning author who, almost as a matter of course, feels obliged to provide suggestions for further investigation. What follows, then, is more reflection tinged with hope than recommendation tainted by duty.
