Samenvatting
De ziekte van Huntington is een autosomaal neurodegeneratieve aandoening die leidt tot atrofie in de basale ganglia en in de cortex. Dit heeft bewegingsstoornissen en mentale stoornissen tot gevolg. De chorea (onwillekeurige bewegingen) is het meest voorkomende en meest opvallende kenmerk. De energiebehoefte kan bij Huntington-patiënten oplopen tot wel 3.000–3.500 kcal per dag, met uitschieters daarboven. Motorische beperkingen, slikstoornissen, stoornissen in het cognitief functioneren en persoonlijkheidsveranderingen kunnen leiden tot beperkingen in het voedingsgedrag. Naast ongewenst gewichtsverlies kunnen obstipatie en braken voedingsproblemen veroorzaken. Wanneer de slikfunctie ernstig verminderd is of als de patiënt met orale voeding niet in zijn voedingsbehoefte kan voorzien, kan kunstmatige toediening van voeding een oplossing zijn. Hierbij moeten de ethische aspecten goed overwogen worden.
